Team #61 from Penn State wins 2019 Turf Bowl

Penn State University's Team #61 took first place in GCSAA's Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition, presented in partnership with John Deere Golf. The winning team includes Ian Patterson, David Hendler, Seth Re, Nicholas Chamberlin and advisor Ben McGraw, Ph.D.

Sixty-three teams, composed of 233 students from 30 different schools, competed in the event Feb. 7. This is an increase of ten teams over last year.

Official Turf Bowl Competition Study Guide Available


The Turf Bowl Competition consists of physical and visual identification of samples, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, essay, short answer and matching questions.


To participate in the GCSAA Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition, students must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate turf program or have graduated
    at the end of the most recent fall semester but not yet entered a graduate
    program or begun full-time employment at a golf facility.
  • Meet GCSAA student member eligibility criteria
  • Be a registered attendee at the GCSAA Education Conference and Golf Industry

Turf Bowl Kick-off Reception

Wednesday, Feb. 6  
5:30 – 7 PM   West Terrace

Let’s get the fun started with the Kick-Off Reception for the 2019 Annual GCSAA Collegiate Turf Bowl, presented in partnership with John Deere Golf.  All teams, advisors and superintendent mentors are welcome at this networking event.  Teams will sign up to participate in the Turf Bowl exam starting at 4:30 p.m. prior to the start of the reception at 5:30 pm. All teams members must be present to sign up.

Turf Bowl Continental Breakfast

Thursday, Feb. 7
7:00 AM – 8:00 AM   Ballroom 20B

This breakfast is held the morning of the competition for participants.

Turf Bowl Competition

Thursday, Feb.7
8:00 – 11:30 AM   Ballroom 20A

The Turf Bowl exam features a written case study, as well as a wide variety of multiple choice, short answer and identification questions covering the agronomic, business and financial management aspects of the superintendent profession.

This exam is for undergraduate students only in teams of up to four participants. Each participant must be a member of GCSAA, a registered attendee of the Golf Industry Show and register as part of a team on site before the exam or at the Turf Bowl Kick-Off Reception. A total of $10,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to the top 10 teams during the Closing Celebration.

The winner of the Tweet Rally, taking home the Annual Collegiate Spirit award, will be announced at the Show Floor Finale.

Closing Celebration

The announcement of the prize winners for the GCSAA Collegiate Turf Bowl is held at the Closing Celebration. Turf Bowl teams are recognized, and there is a reserved section of seating for teams during the program.
