Joseph Roberts, Ph.D.

Joseph Roberts, Ph.D., is an assistant professor and extension specialist in the Department of Plant science and Landscape Architecture at the University of Maryland. He earned bachelors degrees in biology and chemistry from North Carolina State University, a master’s in plant biology and pathology from Rutgers University, and his Ph.D. in plant pathology from North Carolina State University.

Roberts’ joined the University of Maryland in 2015 with a split appointment including extension, research, and teaching.  His previous research has involved characterization of emerging disease issues caused by both fungi and bacteria, with emphasis on how cultural and chemical management practices impact disease progression. In building a research program at the University of Maryland, he has focused on improving our understanding of microbial communities that establish across turfgrass ecosystems.  His extension and education efforts are centered on reducing disease issues through enhancing integrated pest management strategies for both cool and warm-season turfgrass species.
