Green Efforts of Show Vendors
The Golf Industry Show is proud to host events in partnership with vendors that are committed to their community, the region, the environment and the future.
Below are some of their practices:
Aramark Catering
- Collects cooking oil to use for recycling into biodiesel fuel.
- Diverts nearly 100 tons of food waste annually, thanks to the food composting program that began in 2007.
- Purchases beef, pork and lamb through a network of local family-owned farms committed to raising livestock through humane, sustainable practices.
- Purchases organic fruits, vegetables and herbs locally.
- Uses biodegradable corn-based and sugarcane-based cutlery cups and plates.
Freeman (decorator)
- Recycles over 2 million yards of used aisle carpet.
- Carpet padding is made from 98 percent recycled foam content and is recycled back into the carpet pad.
- Modular structural systems are made of 85 percent recycled aluminum, which can be recycled and extruded back into new components.
- Reuses many of the substrates for large signs and wall panels, reducing the demand for these petroleum-based products.
- Implemented a digital order entry system. This paperless system significantly reduces paper consumption and allows for all orders to be stored in a database.
- Exhibit transportation service is a certified member of the EPA SmartWay Transport Partner program.
Kushner and Associates (shuttle)
- Utilizes motor coaches equipped with EPA 07n engines that produce 55 percent less nitrogen oxide and 90 percent less particulate matter than previous models.
- Utilizes motor coaches with 12-speed transmissions that increase fuel mileage by as much as two miles per gallon.
- Utilizes motor coaches with tires that decrease vehicle weight and lower rolling resistance, thereby increasing fuel conservation.
- Trains drivers to reduce idling and use of A/C wherever feasible and practical to conserve fuel and reduce emissions.
Overend Designs (floral)
- Was authentically “green” before it was hot or cool. Several research studies have shown that indoor plants improve worker productivity, reduce stress, create positive and welcoming impressions, reduce noise, and improve indoor air quality by absorbing building toxins.
- Looks to purchase flowers from growers that have received the “green” designation. The floral industry is making a strong movement toward organic and eco-friendly growing techniques. Techniques include organic fertilizers, use of recycled water and hybridized bulbs created to promote water conservation while reducing pesticide usage.
- Utilizes vendors that specialize in decorative planters and products made from rice hulls and other recycled organic materials. They also recycle or reuse all their hard goods, plastics, cardboard, as well as the plant and floral materials.
PSAV (audio/visual)
- Converting rental computer fleet from desktops to laptops.
- Partners with Waste Management to offer the “Lamp Tracker” and “eScrap Tracker” recycling programs. Utilizes single-stream recycling (paper, plastic, cans) at HQ facility, greatly reducing the amount of waste packing and packaging material, as well as personal waste materials.
- Established a “greener gear” policy for processing equipment in a way that minimizes negative effects on the environment.
- 80 percent of equipment purchases are compliant with Energy Star and RoHS standards.
San Diego Convention Center
- The San Diego Convention Center services department serves as a liaison between exhibitors and local non-profit groups to arrange pick-up of donated items post-show, such as pens, pencils, bags, carpet, chairs, notebooks, binders, food and beverage.
- Initial efforts began in 1990 with the diversion of glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans, mixed paper, wood pallets and clean green waste to San Diego’s recycling center.
- Heating/cooling system replacement and upgrades save 2.7 million kWh annually.
- Low-flow, automatic sinks and toilets in all restrooms.
- Outdoor landscaping uses drip irrigation, drought-tolerant plants and mulch to reduce watering.
- Environmentally responsible cleaning products are purchased for carpets, floors, kitchens and bathrooms.
