Penn State University's Team #10 took first place in GCSAA's Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition, presented in partnership with John Deere Golf. The foursome of Thomas Goyne, Derek Buganza, Curt Moore, Kevin Heimann, along with advisor Ben McGraw, Ph.D., will return to State College, Pa., with the traveling trophy and prize award. Second- and third-place honors went to Team #55 from Cal Poly Pomona and Team #23 from Auburn University, respectively.
Rounding out the top 10, in order, were: Team #14 from SUNY Delhi; Team #1 from Michigan State University; a sixth-place tie of Team #11 from Penn State University and Team #51 from University of Guelph; Team #8 from the University of Nebraska; Team #54 from the University of Maryland; and Team #19 from Purdue University. Michigan State University won the 2017 Turf Bowl Rally and $1,000.
Fifty-eight teams, composed of 204 students from 36 different schools, competed in the event Feb. 9 at the Golf Industry Show in Orlando. A team from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, participated in its very first Turf Bowl Competition. A total of $10,000 in cash and prizes was awarded to the top 10 teams during the Closing Celebration.

All participants are encouraged to attend this event to kick off the annual GCSAA Collegiate Turf Bowl Competition, presented in partnership with John Deere Golf. Teams have the opportunity to register for the exam, and a networking reception is provided for teams, advisors and superintendent mentors.
This breakfast is held the morning of the competition for participants.
The Turf Bowl exam features a written case study, as well as a wide variety of multiple choice, short answer and identification questions covering agronomic, business and financial management aspects of the superintendent profession.
This exam is for undergraduate students only in teams of up to four participants. Each participant must be a member of GCSAA, a registered attendee of the Golf Industry Show and register as part of a team on site before the exam or at the Wednesday evening reception. A total of $10,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to the top 10 teams during the Closing Celebration.
